When you burn a fire in one fireplace, do you ever get smoke in another room of your house that also has a fireplace? If your house is very tightly sealed, it may be pulling air down the flue (and siphoning smoke along with the air). Try cracking a window in the room where you are building the fire, and see if that solves the problem.
